Objectives

  • Climate change, globalization, inequality, digitalization,... Many of the major societal challenges of the 21st century are economic in nature. The study of economics will allow you to reveal the logic behind them, to better understand them and to develop solutions.
  • Teach the quantitative toolkit for analyzing modern market economies. Economists take an evidence-based and empirical approach to diagnosing problems and designing remedies and solutions. With digitization and big data, much more data is available and economics is now an essentially empirical field. Economists formulate theories that they can test and make policy recommendations based on evidence.

The two specializations

The specialization in Economic Analysis and Policy provides:

  • advanced training in economic analysis and quantitative methods;
  • to propose strategic solutions for the growth and governance of companies, non-governmental organizations or public institutions;
  • to analyze public policies with respect to businesses or citizens.

The specialization in Macroeconomics and Finance provides:

  • a dual training in economics and finance ;
  • to offer profiles with this dual competence to the financial sector, but also to other sectors (market or non-market) ;
  • to understand the links between monetary economics, financial economics and macroeconomics, links whose importance has been reaffirmed by the financial crisis of 2008.

What our alumni say about it

During the master's degree in economics, we are often required to interact with professors and other students, to make presentations and also to work in teams. Today, in my job as a tax consultant, I realize that the skills I developed during the master's program are essential in the professional world.

The advantages of the master in economics

  • A very strong international outlook (Belgian students 55% - international students: EU 19%, non-EU 26%)
  • All courses taught in English ;
  • A program based on the expertise of HEC Liège
  • 5 double degrees: in Ireland (University of Limerick), in Germany (Universität Hohenheim), in Italy (Università di Pavia and La Sapienza in Rome) and in Hungary (Corvinus University of Budapest)

Professional openings

Numerous surveys show that training in economics is particularly sought after on the job market in Belgium and abroad. The digitalization of our economies reinforces the attractiveness of this training.

Economists are recruited in the private sector, in banks and consulting firms in Brussels, Luxembourg and internationally, in central banks and international financial institutions, in research centers whether academic, private or public, in public administrations, regulatory agencies (energy, telecoms, competition authorities...), European and international institutions.

What our alumni say about it

I did a PhD in economics on the regulation of energy markets in the context of the energy transition. This allowed me to broaden my knowledge related to the portfolio of instruments available to governments. Since 2017, I apply the acquired skills to formulate advice on environmental taxation. I am now an Economist at the OECD Centre for Tax Policy and Administration in Paris.
