Understanding Entrepreneurs’ Brains Through a Unique Scientific Study

Does entrepreneurship shape the brain? Or are some people born with brain characteristics that predispose them to become entrepreneurs? To explore these questions, a recent study examined how entrepreneurs’ brains function using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a technique that makes it possible to visualize brain activity.

Although the role of cognitive processes in entrepreneurs is widely acknowledged—how they think and act under uncertainty— little attention has been paid to studying their brains when they make decisions.

Why do some individuals seem to excel at creating businesses and navigating uncertainty with ease, while others find it more difficult to adapt?

To shed light on this question, we conducted research at the intersection of neuroscience and entrepreneurship. We examined the brain activity of entrepreneurs using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a medical imaging technique.

A collaboration between the GIGA Consciousness Research Unit at the University of Liège (Belgium) and the Liège University Hospital (CHU), our study opens new perspectives on how entrepreneurs make decisions, handle uncertainty, and identify new opportunities.

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)

fMRI allows visualization of brain activity by measuring changes in blood flow. The principle is simple: when a region of the brain becomes active, it consumes more oxygen, which increases blood flow to that area. This surplus of oxygen slightly alters the magnetic properties of the blood. fMRI detects these changes to produce real-time maps of brain activity, offering a detailed view of how the brain functions.

More specifically, our study focused on 23 “habitual entrepreneurs”—those who have launched several businesses—and compared them with 17 managers working in large organizations.

A seed-based resting-state connectivity analysis revealed that these experienced entrepreneurs show increased neural connectivity between specific regions of the brain’s right hemisphere: the insula and the prefrontal cortex. These areas are involved in cognitive flexibility and exploratory decision-making—that is, the ability to adjust strategy and think differently when facing new or uncertain situations.

Better Equipped to Handle Uncertainty

This more connected neural network may help explain why these entrepreneurs seem better equipped to deal with uncertainty and display stronger cognitive flexibility—abilities often associated with spotting entrepreneurial opportunities.

Whether sequentially—serial entrepreneurs who build one venture after another—or concurrently—portfolio entrepreneurs who run several businesses at the same time—these individuals appear to excel at rapid adaptation. A valuable capability in the startup world, where stable reference points are rare.

A second study, examining the same group of entrepreneurs and managers, revealed another intriguing phenomenon: habitual entrepreneurs had a greater volume of gray matter in the left insula. Although this study did not directly measure divergent thinking, prior research has shown that increased gray matter volume in this region is associated with that ability—namely, generating many different ideas to solve a single problem.

This suggests that the brain differences observed in these entrepreneurs may reflect a stronger propensity for divergent thinking.

But a fundamental question remains: Does entrepreneurship shape the brain, or do some people start out with neural characteristics that predispose them to become entrepreneurs?
In other words, are we entrepreneurs by nature or by nurture?

Nature or Nurture?

This question is now central to ongoing research conducted by the team at HEC Liège and the Cyclotron Research Centre (CRC) at the University of Liège. This line of inquiry draws on the concept of brain plasticity, the brain’s ability to change as a result of experience and learning.

If the brain can strengthen specific neural networks through training, much like building muscle, then repeated entrepreneurial experience could itself foster the development of these neural connections.
Conversely, if these brain differences are present from the start, this would raise questions about cognitive or neurobiological traits that favor entrepreneurial behavior.

To answer these questions, new studies are underway within the laboratory and the GIGA-CRC. These include longitudinal research tracking how entrepreneurs’ brains evolve over time, as well as comparisons with young project founders and aspiring entrepreneurs.

The goal is to understand whether—and how—the entrepreneurial experience can shape the brain. This new phase of research is now moving into a key stage: recruiting participants for an fMRI study. We are looking for volunteers, entrepreneurs or not, willing to contribute to this unprecedented scientific exploration of how entrepreneurial practice might influence the brain.

Training the Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow

Integrating neuroscience into entrepreneurship research offers a novel perspective on the factors that may contribute to entrepreneurial mindset. By understanding whether—and how—entrepreneurial experience affects brain structure and function, we could design new training approaches to foster entrepreneurial thinking.

For example, it may become possible to develop practical exercises and immersive learning methods to cultivate in students the skills observed in habitual entrepreneurs.
