In this episode (in French), Arnaud Stiepen and Bernard Fortz discuss his career prior to HEC Liège, as well as his research into applying mathematics to various optimization problems. These include fighting fraud in public transport — by strategically setting ticket prices, fines, and even unpredictable routes — preventing cyberattacks on networks — showing how optimization algorithms are developed to identify the most critical nodes to disrupt a system or, conversely, to protect essential services by strategically allocating resources — and even in the emerging field of energy communities, where optimization helps “prosumers” achieve more efficient and sustainable energy use.
Mathematical algorithms are far more present in our daily lives than we might think.
